mozdev.org - bookie: index
Bookie is an application which keeps all your bookmarks on a central server so that you can access bookmarks from anywhere on the web.
I have a server which is currently using XML-RPC and implements three commands: getRoot, getNode and getChildren. It returns RDF data in the same format that Mozilla itself internally for bookmarks. This is all I need to iterate through a tree.

LocalBusiness.com - Atlanta - News - ChangeAddress shutters doors
The online address-changing service, which launched its services in August 2000, gave movers online access to a network of more than 50,000 banks, magazine publishers, credit card companies, alumni associations and businesses. Users could go online and notify select institutions of an address change.
The company's Website -- at www.changeaddress.com -- was down on Thursday and the company's phone has been disconnected.

Another one bites the dust, right in my backyard. Interesting thing is that a lot of these .coms are good ideas, but the business models are all messed up.

Press Releases: DOUBLECLICK ANNOUNCES STRATEGIC CHANGES TO ITS GLOBAL MEDIA BUSINESS
DoubleClick Inc. (Nasdaq: DCLK), the industry’s leading digital marketing solutions company, today announced fundamental changes to the way the company is approaching its media business.
Curtailing the sale of those annoying banner ads. OK, so somebody noticed that banners have little impact, now what? Millions of people are using the web, why can't we sell them something? Because, the way they are processing information from the web is different. They are buying things, books, cars, houses, insurance, PCs, Cisco routers. But not through cheesy banners.

The Register | Apple patents desktop themes
If this is upheld by the courts, and I'm sure we'll see some litigation, it is a very bad thing. Actually, this may be the thing to break software patents.

Microsoft's plan to providing Windows XP (aka Whistler) with interface themes (aka skins) may be knocked on the head by Apple, which has patented desktop themes.

The patent, granted on 13 February from an application made way back in May 1998, covers "systems and methods for providing a user with increased flexibility and control over the appearance and behaviour of objects on a user interface are described.

"Sets of objects can be grouped into themes to provide a user with a distinct overall impression of the interface. These themes can be invoked by calling a corresponding theme engine."

The patent is number 6,188,399, and you can read it in full here. It follows on from an earlier patent, 5,959,624, covering a "system and method for customising appearance and behaviour of graphical user interfaces".

Gallery of CSS Descramblers
For that little PERL bit:
Two Perl implementations courtesy of MIT Student Information Processing Board members Keith Winstein and Marc Horowitz. The shorter one, qrpff, is 526 bytes. The faster one, 531 bytes long, caches the permutation corresponding to CSStab1, and is fast enough to actually use to watch a movie. The programs take a five-byte title key on the command line (five decimal numbers, in least to most-significant order) and an MPEG 2 Program Stream VOB file on stdin, and output a decrypted version of the VOB file. For example, to play The Matrix: cat /mnt/dvd/VOB_FILE_NAME | qrpff 153 2 8 105 225 | extract_mpeg2 | mpeg2dec -
